THE PEACEFUL TIMES
For a couple of peaceful months I didn't hear much from Steve. He emailed a couple of times, but it was mostly just about how Sue or the kids were doing. I replied, I think. Truthfully, I was afraid to open the lines of communication with Steve too much, because then I would be hearing about the supposed fortune he was making. Who would think that he would be in Chapter 7 now. Then one day he calls me. I knew I shouldn't have answered. It was a gut feeling though, as I didn't look a the caller ID. I just answered. There was Steve. So, he says, how would I like in before the gate closes. I was hoping right then I would get a phone call to interrupt the whole thing and put it off for a time. No such luck. The phone never rings when you want it too. Steve insisted we meet and he could show me in black and white how it all worked. The first couple of dates he gave me I begged off, giving this excuse or that, but finally I ran out of excuses. I agreed to meet for coffee that afternoon. I just wanted to get his pitch out of the way. Steve is a friend, a good friend. I felt I at least owed him a listen.
